Fun with Snow
Hello everyone,
We talked a lot about snow this week at Fiddleheads. On Monday we read No Two Alike, and started our talk about snowflakes, and we did some sledding and played in the "snow mountains" made by the plow at the edge of the property. On Tuesday I had to take an administrative day and Zena and Bonnie took everyone on a wintry adventure to the forest. It is a long trip this time of year through much snow, but it is always good to see the forest in winter. On Wednesday it was very cold and we read about animal tracks and signs and went looking for some animal tracks in the fresh snow. We found squirrels, rabbits and mice. We played a tracking game and took turns being forest animals while the rest of the group counted and then followed the tracks through the snow to find the hiding "animal". We did some more sledding too. On Thursday we read Snowflake Bentley and The Story of Snow. We looked at a book of Bentley's original photographs of snow crystals, made rubbings of pewter casts made from some of his photos, made cut paper snowflakes and some needlepoint snowflake ornaments, and had homemade snowcones with fresh snow and real fruit syrup. So we played in snow, we ate it, we examined it, we learned about it, we slid on it, we admired it's sparkling beauty, we tracked creatures through it, we created art about it, and we climbed on it. It was a fun snowy week!
Yesterday ended our unit on ice and snow. We will begin our unit on friends and community next week. Conferences are this coming Friday, February 4th. We look forward to seeing you then! The following Thursday, February 10th, our last day before our February break, will be our "Friends Day" celebration. All families are invited to join us for a distribution of friendly valentines, treats, and (weather permitting) an outdoor dance party from 12:30-1:00. (Vir is going to DJ again, you don't want to miss it!) Conventional valentines are perfectly sufficient. If you can't make it just send your child's valentines with them to school and we will help them distribute them.
